Darjeeling
Darjeeling – The Champagne of Teas
Perched along the steep Himalayan slopes of northern India, the Darjeeling tea region is one of the most celebrated tea origins in the world. Located in the Indian state of West Bengal, the gardens sit between 2,000 and 7,000 feet above sea level, where cool mountain air, abundant mist, and mineral-rich soil create ideal conditions for slow-growing tea bushes.
This unique terroir produces teas of extraordinary complexity and elegance. Darjeeling teas are renowned for their delicate body, bright liquor, and the distinctive muscatel character—a natural aroma reminiscent of ripe grapes and wildflowers. The flavor profile often reveals layers of stone fruit, honey, fresh alpine herbs, and subtle floral notes.
Harvested in distinct seasonal “flushes,” Darjeeling teas evolve throughout the year. First Flush teas, picked in early spring, are prized for their vibrant freshness and light floral character. Second Flush teas, harvested in early summer, develop the region’s famous muscatel richness. Later summer and autumn harvests yield fuller-bodied cups with warm, mellow depth.
With fewer than one hundred historic estates cultivating tea across the mist-covered hills, Darjeeling remains a region defined by craftsmanship, heritage, and strict geographic identity. Only teas grown within this narrow Himalayan district may bear the Darjeeling name, making each harvest a true expression of place.
Elegant, aromatic, and unmistakably refined, Darjeeling teas are among the most treasured teas in the world.
